Rex Jones the basics full name ♦ Renzo "Rex" Taylor Jones nicknames ♦ Rex age ♦ Twenty-five birthday ♦ June 22nd 1991 occupation ♦ N/A school ♦ where they are now, or have been previously species ♦ Human ability/power ♦ Zoolingualism how the ability works ♦ Rex can talk to animals, he can understand them as though they were speaking human English to him and they can understand him perfectly in turn. While his family history suggests that this power of his has the capacity to extend to all animals, he hasn’t unlocked its full potential and for the moment can only speak to cats with any clarity. Other animals sound like they are speaking another language, he can understand the pitch and the tone and can therefore sometimes glean meaning from their words, but he can’t really understand them like felines, and the further from a feline the animal is the worse it gets. He can sort of understand dogs and bears but snakes and reptiles are a confusing mess. gender ♦ Male (He/him) sexuality ♦ Pansexual (to the degree that he occasionally finds animals sexually attractive) the appearance face claim ♦ Jeremy Dooley height and weight ♦ 5'4" and 155 lbs identifying features ♦ Tattoos out the wazoo- his back and chest in particular are covered in beautifully rendered graphics. But his most important tattoo covers the upper part of his right arm, depicting a woman and a panther. The woman represents his mother and the panther was her totem. He also has a wolf and a lion roaring on the back of each of his hands that others tend to notice pretty immediately. A beautiful depiction of a mountain lion made of tribals and flowers and depictions of the elements of the earth coils its way down the left side of his torso, while his back has a detailed painting of a number of totem animals all together beneath the full moon. In between, thick tribals coil down his side and over both of his arms and part of his neck and lower back. The tribals all mean something in relation to his shamanistic beliefs and he loves to explain them to curious onlookers. overall appearance ♦ Rex is a simple guy with simple needs and a simple, humble appearance. He’s not unattractive but he’s no supermodel either, your average joe of a man with a soft face and round features. His cheekbones are low and gentle, his jaw is strong but not sharp, and his eyes are round and friendly. His hair is kept short, a simple cut kept buzzed on the sides while left to grow a little longer up top, and though the style is not unusual it is one of the first things people notice about him. Rex loves to dye his hair. He’s not actually allowed to have hair dye at the asylum and must go into town to have it done with any seriousness, usually he gets by with food coloring that he steals from the cafeteria, or chemicals he can find in the shop classes that he no longer attends. Because it is usually hobbled together from sometimes random materials, the color doesn’t last so day by day Rex’s hair can go from a wide array of colors, from green to blue to bright fire engine red. He likes it to be bright and vibrant colors, though in the rain and with time the colors can fade into the more pastel range. Naturally, his hair is dark brown, which can still be seen on the sides of his head and in the beard that peppers his jaw. A patient at the asylum means that Rex typically is seen wearing a set of off white/light grey scrubs, he is also often bare foot, not because he has to be just because he likes to be. However, when allowed to wear his clothes during visits or trips out into the city, Rex tries to spice up his appearance with more flashy colorful things. His favorite item of clothing is a motorcycle jacket, a racing type thing with red and white stripes down the arms and patches on the shoulders and chest. It has the logo of a panther embroidered on the back of it, a common motif in his clothing. He likes graphics and things depicting big cats so he wears a lot of shirts with cats on them, varying from silly tye-dye internet memes to more serious brown and green prints. But plenty of his shirts are also plain, the jacket is really his source of attention. This is usually paired with some dramatically ripped jeans and a plain pair of black boots, though in the warmer months he’ll don a pair of khaki shorts to try and beat the heat a little bit. The jacket stays though, usually tied around his waist or thrown over his shoulder, he almost always has it with him, it is a precious item to him. the personality likes ♦ Conspiracy theories, the unpopular opinion, coffee and other hot beverages, soup, warm weather, beaches, swimming, physical activity, climbing shit, cats dislikes ♦ Monotony, routines or any kind of schedule, mornings, red meat, sour things, sleeping, being made fun of, having his beliefs called into question, ignorance or intolerance, rats and mice strengths ♦ Tolerant and welcoming he is pretty accepting of everyone and their beliefs and ideals, Friendly and outgoing he makes friends easily (although he doesn't keep them for very long), he has a pet mountain lion who goes everywhere with him and he's able to communicate with the cat perfectly so should anyone start something Magic would have his back, he's pretty buff and physically powerful especially for someone his size weaknesses ♦ Gullible and kind of senseless he's a little bit of an idiot with a tendency to believe everything that he hears, brutally honest he doesn't really understand lying or how to do it so everything he says is the truth (he's terrible at keeping secrets or hiding things), he's short and small very easy to throw around if you're bigger than him, high energy and kind of jittery he is easily distracted and kind of spacey sort of all over the place at any given time, does not understand the word 'focus' dreams ♦ Get out of the asylum and preferably into some kind of functional life, get married fears ♦ Rats and mice, the idea of being "crazy" overall personality ♦ Unlike most people in his situation who might be scared or downtrodden, Rex is an upbeat and fairly loft-minded individual. He’s notorious for having his head in the clouds, always aiming for the stars and trying to do more, see more, be more than what he already is. He’s pretty daring and dauntless in this regard. He doesn’t shy away from challenges and doesn’t really seem to be afraid of anything. But like most things, there is more to Rex than what he seems. Rex is schizoaffective, he hasn’t been officially diagnosed and the exact nuances of his neurodivergence are still unknown but he definitely has something going on. His offbeat ideas tend to gain grandeur the longer he has them, especially those related to urban legends, cryptozoology and common superstition, Rex is very superstitious, almost to the point of neurosis. He’s also very spiritual, believing in the idea of animal spirits and shamanism. While by itself, this is not particularly unusual, he gets particularly defensive of these ideals, not really tolerating people making fun of him or claiming that he is being ridiculous, he doesn’t take criticism well. But he is thankfully harmonious, even when someone is annoying him by poking fun at his beliefs, his instinct is just to go prove them wrong rather than get into a serious altercation. He strongly believes that if he can just find proof of these things everyone will just have to shut up and believe him, so he is driven and single-minded in his pursuit of knowledge and the truth, which would be an endearing quality if he wasn’t so screwed up in the head. At least when his beliefs are not being called into question, Rex is a cheerful fun-loving guy who is generally fun to be around. Gregarious and adventurous, he’s outgoing and curious, interested in all things and always searching for answers to his endless list of questions. He can be a little childish in this way, always asking ‘why?’ to questions that seem like common sense and not really understanding the finer points of life and how to live it. Though he loves to socialize, he doesn’t really understand it and its nuances. He can be very difficult to put up with and, other than his constant companion- a mountain lion named Magic- he doesn’t really have any friends. the history father ♦ Ruben Patrick Jones, status unknown mother ♦ Delia Esme Jones, deceased siblings ♦ none important people ♦ Magic is a male four year old North American Cougar (also known as a mountain lion or puma or panther, depending on where you are) whom Rex found as a cub. He snuck the big cat into the asylum with him as a small baby and hid him until it was unreasonable and it's been a tug of war with administration ever since. Because of his ability to speak to animals, Rex is really close with Magic. He believes mountain lions are his spiritual guide through this world and Magic is his second, so Rex is really protective of his friend and defiant and difficult to deal with when they are separated. Over the years, the asylum has become more lenient as Rex proves that he has total control over Magic and under the stipulation that the cat wear a muzzle most of the time. Still, they are separated often, if ever Rex is in a bad mood that is usually the reason. When together, both Rex and Magic are docile and friendly. Magic is bold and fearless, somewhat audacious, and super arrogant with a snarky sarcastic sort of personality. He's a little bit confused by humans and doesn't understand a lot of their mannerisms but for a cat he's pretty well educated on how to deal with them. He's calm and very chill, a little immature but generally fun to be around, he's never hurt anyone as of yet but has stated pretty explicitly that he would defend Rex without thought, hesitation or question should his precious human ever be threatened. hometown ♦ Sorrento, Louisiana overall history ♦ Rex was raised by a single mother, like so many children in the United States. His father was completely absent, he never met the man, though his mother made sure that he knew the man’s name should he ever come back into Rex’s life for any reason, she wanted him to be prepared, to be ready, to be weary. That’s because, while she was pregnant, his mother was attacked by her then fiancé, or so she claims. The more she told the story, the more Rex got to wondering if the whole event was a massive misunderstanding, but he was only there in spirit so he does not know. What he does know was that his father had the power to ignite fires and during a heated argument, one of many they’d been having at the time, he was set off, the spark of a powder keg that exploded into flame. It burned the house down around them, destroyed everything that they owned, and burned his mother so severely that she was irreparably scarred for life. As you can imagine, their marriage was over after that. It was probably over before that- they’d intended on marrying young because of the baby, who was an accident, so they were not really soulmates in any sense of the word. But even their respect for each other burned up in that fire. Rex’s father went to jail and his mother had an emergency c-section to prevent harm to the baby as she was treated for her egregious injuries. Rex spent most of his childhood in the hospital, at first for himself for being born prematurely but then, as time went on, his mother’s injuries complicated her health in various ways. She kept landing back into medical care for one reason or another, needing skin grafts and surgeries to correct breathing issues, her lungs greatly damaged in the fire. But despite that, she managed to keep her free spirit. Rex remembers his mother fondly, a brilliant woman who shone like the sun. Though she wasn’t much to look at, she was the most beautiful person in the world at heart. She taught him right from wrong, how to read and write, the importance of education and instilled the deep spirituality in him that still pumps through his veins to this day. She had a particularly negative opinion of love after the disaster that was her first marriage, and she never did try to or really succeed at ever marrying again, but Rex didn’t let that get his hopes down. Both he and his mother shared a dream of settling down behind a white picket fence with a lover, some kids and a dog. His mother would never achieve that dream. Instead, she would contract lung cancer and die when Rex was seventeen. Rex was a wreck after that. He regretted a lot, he wasn’t as kind as he should’ve been to his mother in his teenage years, all the trips to the hospital getting in the way of his schooling and his social life and they never had the money to pay for anything between all of the medical bills. She resented his father for that but Rex resented her, thought she was spending too much time wallowing in her own self-pity to get up and do what needed to be done. He regrets that deeply now, the night that she died, they had an argument and he stormed out of her hospital room, only to never have the chance to return. She died without him, alone… Well, not alone. An avid animist, she believed strongly in the healing power of animal spirits and was particularly fond of big cats. So she had a mountain lion with her named Marley who was her only companion in her final moments. Marley, the house, everything sort of fell on Rex when his mother passed and, at only seventeen, he could barely keep his head on straight, let alone navigate the torturous world that we all live in. He couldn’t work, was so stressed that he didn’t eat and didn’t sleep. Marley did nothing but criticize him for his treatment of his mother and he felt such guilt that it drove him to attempt suicide by jumping off of a bridge onto a highway. He lived obviously, but the voices never stopped, only intensified and he went straight from one hospital into another. He’s been at Monroeville since he was nineteen. Marley died a few years ago in a big cat sanctuary that Rex used to visit, they never really got along after all that had happened between them. But Marley and his mother had been almost one unit, like one being, so close to each other that it was unreal. He wanted that with someone, with something, anything, just anyone. He was lost and confused, the world was telling him that he was broken, that he was crazy, that he was a flawed functionless husk of a human but his mother had been so brilliant beneath all of her flaws. How did he become like her, how did he rise above this? He didn’t know how to continue. Like an answer to a prayer, he found Magic, wandering lost and alone on a snowy mountain during a skiing trip that Rex had defiantly wandered away from. He took the cub into his arms and instantly felt a spark that ignited a friendship that has persisted beyond all odds. The asylum was not pleased to find out that Rex had been harboring a big cat in his room for a year, which soon became several years as he fought with them tooth and nail to keep him and not be sent away. He needed Magic to be whole, he could not let another person get away from him in life, he just wouldn’t allow it. The asylum staff generally keeps Magic in a cage in the basement, where Rex either visits him or sneaks down and breaks him out for a short time, only for the two of them to be separated again. But Magic is good for the boy’s soul, good for his sanity, so with some push and pull from his doctors, Rex has been allowed more and more time with Magic and the cat given more and more freedom. It’s still touch and go, whenever Rex is caught misbehaving the cat is instantly removed from his person and should Magic ever hurt anyone, it’d be a done deal, he’d probably be euthanized. But for now, there’s at least a little peace among them. the role player alias ♦ The X-Ray Dog (just Ray is fine) age ♦ 27 pronouns ♦ any pronouns are acceptable code ♦ ADMIN EDIT other characters ♦ N/A |
