When she loses control, she becomes physically ill (nausea, vomiting, and can even pass out), in extreme cases she can also become trapped in her own visions. She will physically be in a place, but would not be able to speak, see, or move until she can break her mental connection with the vision. Justine and Alexander hated each other completely and had their children to try to keep up appearances in the professional worlds. When she was ten, she started to notice weird things with her brother. He would be able to do things that no one could explain. She was completely heartbroken when they took him away from the house and brought him to some place called Primrose Academy. She became horribly depressed and missed her older brother. Her mother tried to help her by bringing her around her book club meetings and with her best friend. Van became close with Astor Solomon and he really helped her deal with missing her older brother. She would spend all of her time with him. They would walk to their classes together, hang out after school, and spend any time they could with each other. When Van turned twelve, she went to talk to her mother about spending the night at Astor's house, and she found her mother dead in her bed. Her mother mixed sleeping pills with cupcake frosting, and killed herself. There was a note next to her that she was tired of pretending to be happy for everyone else. That she knew about the affairs Alexander was having, and that she would always love her children. Van screamed and got help for her mother, but it was too late. The funeral was short and Van just remembered standing next to Astor the whole time. The school that locked away her older brother wouldn't let him leave, so Van refused to leave Astor's side. Her father remarried six months later to Van's former babysitter who was barely nineteen at the time. During the wedding Van and Astor hid away in the gardens and watched the stars and just talked the whole night. When she was fourteen, she realized that she was able to make people see the things that she wanted them to. She always thought that she was just an extremely gifted liar, but found out that she was able to make her friends see things that weren't there, or she would be able to sneak out of classes with Astor and her teachers would still see them in their desks. When she told her parents what was happening, they sent her to Primrose Academy within hours. Van tried to run away from her parents to get to Astor, but they forced her into the ivy covered halls of Primrose. Her brother met her at the door and explained everything that was happening to her and what happened with him. She was happy to be back with her older brother, but she hated that she was away from Astor. She would try to leave the school to be with Astor, but she was unable to get out of the gates. her brother explained that she was still too out of control with her abilities and that she needed to stay until she would be safe and that she wouldn't hurt Astor. A few weeks later, Astor was brought to Primrose too. She wouldn't leave his side the whole first night he was there.
